TOWN GARDENING COMPETITION

The Town Gardening Competition is open to all residents, schools, businesses and allotments within the parish of Skipton and entry is free of charge.  2017 competition categories are -

  • BEST PRIVATE FRONT GARDEN
  • BEST PRIVATE BACK GARDEN
  • BEST SCHOOL GARDEN

Entrants in these three categories will receive Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver or Bronze awards and category winners awarded Best in Category.

Courtyard gardens should be entered into either Front or Back Garden categories, depending on their location.

Judging will take place in mid July and judges must be allowed access to assess entries.  Judges will work in pairs, wear Skipton in Bloom ID badges and/or hi-vis jackets and leave visiting cards.  They will be totally impartial and their decision is final.  Photographs may be taken and used for promotional purposes.

NEW FOR 2017 - Discretionary prizes will be awarded for outstanding displays at business premises and allotments (Middletown and Broughton Road) spotted along the judging route.  Judges will also visit businesses and allotments entered in last year's competition.  Cards will be left at businesses and allotments being awarded spot prizes and winners should email info@skiptoninbloom.co.uk to register their contact details.

All entrants, discretionary prize winners, judges and sponsors are invited to the Awards Ceremony to be held at Starbucks, Albion Place, Skipton on Thursday 7 September at 2.15pm.

For more information, please email us or phone 01756 700553.

Results of our 2017 Town Gardening Competition were announced at the Awards Ceremony held at Starbucks on Thursday 7 September.

Thanks were given to our category sponsors for their continued support of the competition - JACS of Skipton, Skipton Chamber of Trade, Skipton Hire Centre, Twin Locks Garden Centre and Yorkshire Housing - and a big thankyou also went to the Skipton BID team, the main supporter of Skipton in Bloom projects.

Katie, Cassie and the team at Starbucks were also thanked for generously hosting the event.

New awards for this year were the discretionary spot prizes being awarded in 3 categories - for Business or Statutory Body Displays, Broughton Road Allotments and Middletown Allotments.  Judges had looked for outstanding displays in these categories and also made a point of visiting entries from the previous year's competition.

Judges' comments on Best in Category -
"Children conducted the visit to the garden, filled with knowledge and enthusiasm.  The garden provides a real learning opportunity - involving children and some parents - hatching butterflies, grinding school-grown wheat, growing a whole variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers - all woven into the curriculum.  A great garden."
